It's a small room and the dynamic enthusiasm of the four ladies gathered in it fills it with an energy that tells you this is something a bit different. This is Myrna Gordon Business Services (MGBS), a 100% female-owned and -managed business and these are the ladies that make it what it is.

“We all have strong backgrounds in our various areas of expertise and we are all leaders who want to make a difference,” enthuses Myrna Gordon herself. “Each one has value to add and together we are here to build something strong that we really believe in.”

Established in October 2007, MGBS provides a unique blend of offerings including corporate support services, technology support services and business tourism. Myrna was persuaded to use her name for the company when she realised that it is already an established 'google-able' entity and that it is already associated with much of what she is wanting to create through the business.

Together with that I want to build on the heritage that I have,” she shares. “We are all defined by our heritage, morals and values – this creates the foundation of our lives. As such I chose to build the company's logo around the Roach family crest to encapsulate that heritage.”

Added to the roach fish is a female figure, which symbolises not only the strength in women that will be an inherent part of the company but also the fact that the company will impact people in all that it does. The technology wheels reflect the emphasis that will be placed on technology, while the shield symbolises strength and power. Finally, the colour red also communicates power and Myrna recalls how – against all advice at the time – wearing red for interviews always got her through.

Myrna left her position as Marketing Director at Alliance HCM to start MGBS but also has a wealth of experience behind her. This includes technology strategist and eventually (acting) Chief Technologist at SARS, senior and project management positions at Telkom, Landbank and Oracle University, involvement in various executive boards and membership of the IT Advisory Board of Fort Hare University (a position she still retains), amongst others.

She always had ambitions for leadership but had to push hard through the negative words spoken over those ambitions. Today she has achieved many of the goals she set for herself and MGBS is the next step.
